High Tide at the Marina Prompts Cocktail Hour

The marina at high tide

The sea made an unannounced social call to Crab Key Marina yesterday afternoon. As the high tide climbed within a mere three inches of the main boardwalk’s weather-beaten planks, the usual afternoon crowd didn't retreat towards higher ground. Instead, they simply adjusted their latitude.

Proprietor of The Drunk Coconut Sullivan "Sully" Drake was seen calmly shifting the Coconut’s heavy teak tables six feet closer to the waterline as the sea began to lap at the pilings. "If the ocean is going to take the trouble to visit the bar, it’s only polite to have a drink ready," Sully remarked while adjusting his linen shirt. "We’re just providing a more intimate nautical experience."

The resulting 'Dock-Side' hour became an instant, albeit damp, success. Harbour Master Barnaby Brightwell said everyone enjoyed their afternoon. “Residents and visitors alike were drinking with the spray of the salt air practically garnishing their glasses,” he said.

The impromptu session only concluded when the tide finally decided to recede, though some regulars argue it was actually the local ice supply running low that truly ended the festivities.
